Mon, Jan 9 - Mem Quiz 6b Prep & Jonah Intro

Next Quiz/Test: Friday is Memory Quiz 6b: Jonah 4:10-11 (NIV, 1984)

Handouts: Jonah Packet (blue)

Reminders:
- Service Hours: There are three things to turn in for this on April 16: Essay, Record Form, Comm. Service Evaluation Form
- Devotion 3: Due TOMORROW! See RenWeb for further details.

Instructional Time: Unit 6: Elijah & Jonah (1 Kings 17-22 & Jonah)
Journal 6-5:
Work on page three of the new blue packet, “Concerned for… What?”
- Put your name on the top & then on your own, quietly begin to work through this. Bring this to - class tomorrow and keep it in your notebook for the Notebook Check next week.

Reflection on the LORD's appearance to Elijah: This likely taught Elijah that even though God works in big visible ways (that whole 'fire from heaven' episode), He also works in quiet ways!

Jonah Handout 3: Concerned for… What?
- What were they each concerned about?
- - Jonah: The vine & himself
- - God: The Ninevites, Jonah, & even the cattle!

- How did you see this?
- - Jonah: He cries, whines, & wishes for death when the vine dies
- - God: God sent Jonah to Nineveh (instead of just destroying them), giving them a second chance! Also, God reaches out to Jonah to correct his attitude and have a relationship with him, even when he is being mean & whining

- Who did they want good things to come to?
- - Jonah: Himself! He wanted his comfort, his shelter, & his way wit Nineveh (their destruction)
- - God: The Ninevites & Jonah

- What did they create or tend?
- - Jonah:Nothing! Well, he 'made' the shelter, but that's the closest he got! He didn't 'tend the vine' yet he cared for it like it was his child
- - God: He created the Ninevites & cared for them, 'tending' them by reaching out to them in such ways as sending Jonah to them--shouldn't he have concern for them?

- What is the long-term result of what they cared for?
- - Jonah: The Vine: It would deteriorate and be gone, there was no long-term benefit from it or for it!
- - God: The Ninevites: They would live their lives affecting everyone around them and in the end die to either an eternity with Him or an eternity separated from Him!
- - - Consider C.S. Lewis' quote, "You have never met a mere mortal."
- - - We were made for eternity! Have the greatest concern in life for those things where last the longest, those things which are eternal, other people.

- What does their concern tell us about who they are?
- - Jonah: He was selfish & uncaring!
- - God: He is loving, concerned, values people and desires a relationship with them

- - - - What was wrong with how much Jonah was concerned about just this vine
- - - - What was wrong with what he was not concerned about instead?
- - Explain how God views and treats Nineveh. (2 points)
- - - For your answer to this, look at the answers to our questions on the worksheet previous handout,"Concerned for… What? Jonah Handout 3".
