Instructional Time: Unit 6: Elijah & Jonah (1 Kings 17-22 & Jonah)
Journal 6-4: Read 1 Kings 19:1-14
- List the key events in order of how they happen after the show-down on Mt. Carmel.
- Then answer…
- - Why did Elijah suddenly become so frightened?
- - - Jezebel threatened to kill him within a day!
- - Do you think you would have responded the same way? Why?
- - Elijah just experienced God in a powerful way (you know, that whole ‘fire from heaven’ thing). Now in his fear he couldn’t see God anymore. How did God show Himself to Elijah this time? Through a quiet whisper, like a gentle breeze.
- - Why do you think God chose this? Likely to teach him that God works in big & powerful ways as well as quiet and small ways.
Here we also finished our discussion of:
- The Showdown on Mt. Carmel! 1K 18:20-40
- Review yesterday's journal notes for this
After the Showdown on Mt. Carmel: 1K 18:41-46
- An end to the drought comes!
- By Elijah's advice, Ahab hitched his chariot and rode to Jezreel, yet Elijah ran ahead of him!
- What is odd about this? Elijah outran a chariot…
- How? The power of the LORD came upon him!
Elijah’s Fear & God’s Comfort:
- Remember what Jezebel did to the prophets of God? (Something Obadiah tried to thwart)
- - Kill them all!
- - Now that same fate falls on her prophets because Elijah had them all put to death!
- 1K 19:1-9)
- - Because of this, Jezebel seeks to kill Elijah
- - Elijah is understandably afraid and runs for his life!
- God provided food & rest for him.
- - During this time Elijah prays for death! (a bit overly dramatic, perhaps?)
- - Despite the powerful way God just revealed Himself (you know, that whole fire from heaven thing), Elijah become depressed in his fear--thinking that he was the last one left who truly followed God.
- - After being supplied food & rest, Elijah fled to Mt. Horeb (also called Mt. Sinai)
The LORD Appears to Elijah: 1K 19
- 9-11a) While at Mt. Sinai we again see Elijah's fear & depression
- 11b-13) Yet God ‘passes by’ Elijah, not in the wind storm, earthquake, or fire, but in the gentle breeze.
- - This likely taught Elijah that even though God works in big visible ways (that whole 'fire from heaven' episode), He also works in quiet ways!
- 14-18) God then encourages Elijah & gives him several commands
- - One encouragement was the reassurance that there were 7000 others who never bowed before the false gods--they also were still faithful to God alone
- - The commands were...
- - - Go back to Israel
- - - Anoint Hazael over Aram
- - - Anoint Jehu over Israel
- - - Anoint Elisha to take over after Elijah's work is done
