Instructional Time: Unit 1 - Introducing Worldviews
Journal 1-5: Study Packet, Page 8
- As a 5-7 sentence paragraph, describe why you think people see & understand the world differently.
- Consider answering such questions as…
- - What, specifically, shapes somebody’s view of the world?
- - What, specifically, shaped your view of the world?
- - How do we change/grow in our views?

Video: reView: Worldviews TS: Student Manual, Page 19.
- 1) Who has a worldview?
- - Everyone!  It is part of being human.
- - For some reason, every person tries to make sense of the world.  We are concerned about relationships, moral questions, our future, our past, etc... It is how we have been made by God.
- - - Interestingly, animals don't seem to concern themselves about these things!
- 2) What are the two roles of a worldview?
- - An explanation/interpretation of the world
- - The application of this explanation/interpretation to your life
- 3) How did Dr. Brown define the two roles?
- - Explanation: View of the world
- - Application: View for the world
- 4) Someone once said, “Find a worldview that fits you and then live it passionately.” What is wrong with this statement?
- - The issue is not to find a worldview that fits you, but to find one that fits the world
- - In other words, we want to find truth, not just find ideas that sound or feel good.
- 5) What’s the difference between the role of an artist and an architect?
- -An artist helps us understand what is happening through his/her paintings
- - An architect helps us know how to behave because we see the blueprints.

Christian Worldview Connection & Response: Study Packet, Page 3
- Spiritual Battles often take place in our…
- - Minds
- - - 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ” (ESV)
- - Therefore, we must be careful which ideas we believe!

Worldviews: Related Ideas: Study Packet Pages 2 & 6
The Importance of Theology:
- - The foundation of anybody's worldview is their theology
- - There are three major theology groups:
- - - Pantheism: Sometimes called 'Transcendentalism'
- - - - Sees everything as ultimately spiritual
- - - - Examples: Transcendentalism, New Age, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc…
- - - Theism:
- - - - Sees the physical world as made by a spiritual God
- - - - Examples: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc…
- - - - - When we reference this term this year, our focus will mainly be on Christianity
- - - Atheism: Sometimes called 'Naturalism'
- - - - Sees everything as physical
- - - - Ex.: Naturalism, Materialism, Humanism, etc…

A Christian Worldview:
- If one God made everything, His ideas are right
- - If we have His ideas, we will have His worldview
- - If the Bible teaches God’s ideas & then we can get a correct worldview by knowing the Bible!
- What you believe about God nurtures how you think about everything else in life
- - A biblical worldview affects all areas of life!
- In John 14:6, Jesus claimed,“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”
- - He claims to be the way to live our life & the way to find God (nick-named 'Father' here)
- - He claims to be the truth, the one with the right ideas that we should believe & live by
- - He claims to be the life, offering us true life as it was meant to be
- - So, what is the way & truth of Jesus? We will study this more later, but for now…

Video: reView: Swear: Student Manual, Page 18
- 1) Could the detective determine what had happened from the testimonies of the witnesses?  Why or why not?
- - No, he couldn't because everyone had a different perspective
- 2) Did the detective ask everyone the same questions? Did the answers match?
- - The detective asked all the same questions, but the answers didn't match
- 3) How is it possible for everyone to answer differently?
- - They all have a different perspective--they come from different walks of life, see the world differently because of unique experiences, etc...  Just because it is the same question doesn't mean it will have the same answer.
- 4) From their answers, what information can you determine about each of the witnesses?
- - Many options: "Macho' guy, rich & snobby lady, scared bank teller, short guy, tall woman, older observant guy, etc...
- - In a similar way, we can observe where a person is coming from by how they answer the ultimate questions of life.

- Image Source: http://www.christianitytoday.com/edstetzer/2012/november/big-story-of-scripture-creation-fall-redemption.html?paging=off

The Story of the Bible:
- About our history, the Bible says that—
- - God is in charge of it
- - God has always been involved with it
- Four biblical main themes can summarize the history of mankind: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration
- - This begins to answer your test short answer #2
- - Take notes on page 1

Creation: What does the Bible teach about this?
- God is Eternal: He has always existed
- God is Creator: He made everything
- God put humans into 4 main relationships:
- - Relationship with God: God wants a relationship of authentic obedience & love from each of us
- - Relationship w/ourselves: We are made ‘in God’s image,’ w/an identity & self-esteem, We each of purpose & value as God’s creation
- - Relationship w/others: Which make up key pieces of society (families, governments, churches—the 3 main social institutions)
- - Relationship w/creation: We are responsible to care for the world, plants & animals, alike!
- And it shares that when God was done, everything was "Very Good!"

Fall:
- If everything was "Very Good," what happened?
- - Being made in God’s image allowed us to make our own decisions
- - We didn’t have to follow God like a robot
- People choose to do bad things: This is what Christians call "sin"
- - We broke off our relationship w/God
- - This led to suffering & death
- - This broke our other 3 relationships—
- - - Relationships w/self, others, & creation
- The Consequences:
- - Because of God's justice: We deserved to die for our sins
- - Because of God's love: He wanted to heal us, He didn’t want us to stay broken!

Redemption: To buy something back
- God created a way to bring humanity back into a special relationship w/Himself:
- - How?
- - - He had Jesus pay the penalty for our sin
- - - - To die the death that we deserved
- - - - Jesus 'redeemed’ by paying the price of death to save us (get us back)
- - - He died in our place, allowing our relationship with God to be healed.
- - - - See Genesis 3:15, 21; John 3:16-21, Acts 17:24-31
- - Ultimately healing our other 3 relationships: w/self, others, & creation
- Want to know how to enter this new relationship w/God?
- - Ask me or any other teacher at any time this year!

Restoration:  History is concluded as God returns:
- God judges everyone: w/punishments & rewards!
- - Punishment: Those w/o a relationship w/Him are forever separated from Him
- - Reward: Those w/a relationship w/Him are made perfect & forever w/Him
- The *bad* world is destroyed:
- - The world is remade w/no problems or sins!
- - Paradise is restored!
- - Everything is made "Very Good!" forever!

- - What happens next?
- - NOTE: These are 'big questions' that everyone, in some way, answers in their life (whether consciously or unconsciously!)
- 3) Why didn’t the other students help him answer the questions?
- - He had to answer them for himself
- - Like each of us have to work through & answer these questions for ourselves--we cannot just copy someone else
- 4) Why was it important that he come back and sign his name on the test booklet?
- - He had to take ownership for his answers
- 5) Why are some of the big questions we ask in life?
- - Many answers for this could be given, this was actually the journal activity for today.

Video: reView: Ultimate Questions TS: Student Manual/Workbook, page 15.
- 1) What are the four ultimate questions?
- - Origins: Where did everything come from?
- - Meaning: Is there a meaning of life? If so, what is it?
- - Morality: What is right and wrong?  And how do we know?
- - Destiny: What happens when we die?
- 2) What makes these questions ultimate?
- - All questions that take life seriously ultimately come down to one (or more) of these questions!
- - Everybody from every time in history must answer them
- - - Ignoring them is a form of an answer
- - - They are inescapable because they affect everything from the way an individual lives to how a nation governs
- - The answers deal not just with ourselves, but with all humanity & all of the universe!
- 3) What is popular culture?
- - See previous blog entries for this.
- 4) Why is it wrong to think it doesn’t matter what the answer to the ultimate questions are?
- - Because it actually does matter!
- - Our ideas about reality determine how we live day-by-day

Worldview: Related Ideas: Study Packet, Page 2
-  Four Key Ultimate Questions of Life: Your worldview determines (and comes from) how you answers to life’s big questions. A good World View answers these:
- - Origins: Where did everything come from?
- - Meaning: Is there a purpose to life?  If so, what?
- - Morality: What is ‘right & wrong?' How do we know?
- - Destiny: What happens when we die?

- - 3) How can you keep yourself from being ‘conformed’ into the values & beliefs that these support?
- When you are done: Study for Friday’s quiz.

Quiz 1a Preparation: We finished talking about this, see yesterday's notes.

Worldview: Study Packet, Page 2
- Worldview: Your most basic ideas (beliefs and values) that shape your view of & for the world.
- - It is how you ‘make sense’ of the world
- A worldview is formed on ideas
- - With the wrong ideas…
- - - The world doesn’t quite look right
- - - Bad consequences could follow! (Example: Slavery & the Nazi’s)
- - With the right ideas
- - - The world makes better sense
- - - Good consequences follow! (Example: Risking your life to save others)
- This is your view:
- - Of the world: What you think it is like
- - - How you explain & interpret the world (which determines how you live)
- - For the world: What you think it should be
- - - Which is how you will try to change it
- Key Concepts of a Worldview:
- - Your worldview is the basis of what you do (actions), think (decisions) & feel.
- - Everyone has a worldview
- - - Different people/cultures teach different ideas
- - - So, worldviews differ from person to person
- - Over time, your worldview will change.
- - - Passive Change: When people receives their foundational ideas (values & beliefs) without considering them.
- - - Active Change: When people thoughtfully consider & test what ideas they will accept for their worldview
- Examples that help explain a worldview: Your worldview is like…
- - A map of the world: It shows where you are & where you are going
- - Eye-Glasses: It interprets how you view & focus on the world
- - A top on a Puzzle Box: It shows how all of life's pieces fit together

Worldview: Related Ideas: Study Packet, Page 2
- Ideas: The foundation of one’s worldview is on the ideas that he/she believes & values.
- - All ideas have consequences (results)!
- - Generally…
- - - Good ideas have good consequences (e.g. Slavery & the Nazi’s)
- - - - Believe wrong ideas? World doesn’t look right!
- - - Bad ideas have bad consequences (E.g. Risk life to save others)
- - - - Believe right ideas? World makes more sense!
- - You can choose your worldview by thoughtfully considering & testing your foundational ideas.
- - Do not select a worldview that 'best fits you!'
- - - Instead, select a worldview that best fits truth/reality
- 10 Main Parts of your Worldview:
- - History: What is the reason & meaning of what has happened?
- - Ethics: How should we behave? Why?
- - Economics: How should we use our resources?
- - Law: What is the basis for law?
- - Theology: Is there a God? How can we know?
- - Philosophy: What is truth? How do we know it?
- - Politics: What is the purpose of government?
- - Biology: What is the origin and order of life?
- - Sociology: What makes a healthy society?
- - Psychology: What is the human internal nature?

Popular Culture: Study Packet, Page 2
- Popular Culture:
- - A society's collection of values, beliefs, ideas, & behavior.
- - Mainly made popular through media & technology (e.g. TV, movies, music, & the internet)
- Popular culture is to us like the ocean is for a fish:
- - We are surrounded by it, But don't even know it!
- - We are constantly influenced by it, We cannot escape it!
- - We see everything through it; It influences how we see the world!

Aug 22, Tue - Quiz 1a Prep & An Intro to Culture

Next Quiz/Test: Friday is Quiz 1a: Romans 12:2, 2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)

Handouts: None given

Reminders:
Book Report Key Due-DatesTitle & Author (Mon, Sep. 11, written on a paper in class), Pre-Reading Form (Mon, Sep. 25, @ start of class), Book Report/Project (Mon, Nov. 14, report on TurnItIn.com / Art @ start of class)

- Fill out the “Personal Summary” at the top
- - Explain what you think these verses are saying in 15 or more words.
- - This is graded for completion

Video: re:Views: Numb: We watched & then discussed this, if you were gone, arrange a time to come by before or after school & see the video.
- Numb: To not feel something
- In the video, the man seemed to be numb to the changes in his: Coffee, Suit, Lunch, Car, & Apartment
- Culture influences us a lot—
- - Often we don’t even realize how it changes us (we are numb to it)!
- - It changes our values, thoughts, & behaviors
- - It is a big part of who we become
- What is Culture? According to Merriam Webster (Source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/culture):
- - - The beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time
- - - A way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization (such as a business)
- Questions from the Student Workbook, page 3…
- - 1) What is the film about?
- - -How things influence us in ways we don't realize.
- - 2) How did the main character react to what was happening around him?
- - -He didn't notice it; or if he did notice, it was subtle
- - 3) What are examples of things that changed as a result of the influences around him?
- - -His apartment, coffee, suit, lunch, car, etc...
- - 4) What do each of these examples represent in today’s popular culture?
- - -Advertising, media, etc...
- - 5) What do you think the TV analyst meant when he said, “The question then becomes: What are we going to do? Are we going to sit here and be numb, or are we going to do something about it?”
- - -This, as well as the radio interview with the senator early in the film ("The longer we stand by and do nothing, the harder it will be to take control later"), is another way of saying that if we allow culture's influence to permeate our lives, we will become desensitized to its control over our actions.  It is hard to engage culture if we don't recognize it all around us and the power that it asserts
- - 6) What are some of the things that influence you on an ordinary day?
- - -All sorts of things could be put here!  Music, movies, books, TV, magazines, peer pressure, what friends say, textbooks, etc...

Video: Culture TS: We watched & then discussed this (Student Workbook, pg 4), if you were gone, arrange a time to come by before or after school & see the video.
- 1) What did Dr. Brown mean when he mentioned the fish in the ocean?
- - Dr. Brown said, “Culture is the ocean we swim in.  Like a fish in the middle of the ocean, it doesn’t even know that it’s wet.  More than that, everything it sees, it sees through the water!”
- - We are surrounded by, influenced by, see everything through, & can't escape it.
- 2) Culture has a major influence on what three things?
- - Our values, beliefs, & behaviors
- 3) What is popular culture?
- - A collection of values, themes, ideas, & behavior that is popularized mainly through media & technology.  The most visible forms of popular culture are seen in television, movies, radio, music, magazines, the internet, etc...
- 4) Why is popular culture so influential?
- - Popular culture becomes a means by which people particularly young people, express their identity & values.  It is also the means by which they explore the big questions in life.
- 5) How is “the right to choose” seen as the most important value in our culture?
- - We like to be "pro-choice" about everything.  Ask how everyone would feel if there was only one kind of ketchup or one television station to watch.  This is actually how it is under communist governments! But is choice always a good thing? The answer is that having the ability to decide enables us to choose what is right and good, but also to choose what is wrong and bad.
- - Do you think that it really is the 'most important value?'
- - What else may be?

Introducing the Worldviews: We had a brief introduction to this, our topic this year

Ideas have consequences:
- - What you values effects the ideas you believe.
- - These ideas affect what you do, say, feel, and think.
- - These ideas determine how you see, understand, and respond to the world.
A worldview...
- - ... is your most basic ideas (beliefs & values) that shape your view of & for the world.
- - ... tries to answer life's big questions (God, man, the universe, truth, values, etc...).
- - ... is gained through your culture & also actively affects your culture.
- - ... contains these 10 area of thought:
- - - Theology: Is there a God? How can we know (if there is & who God is)?
- - - Philosophy: What is truth? How do we know it?

A World of Ideas: Student Workbook, Pages 6-7
- How do movies try to teach us things?
- - George Lucas said, “I’ve always tried to be aware of what I say in my films because all of us who make motion pictures are teachers, teachers with very loud voices”
- - In the last 3 movies that you’ve seen, what are some of the ideas/values that they have ‘taught?’
- How have you seen this quote as true in your life?
- - “Often people get their beliefs the same way they catch colds—by being around other people! And the more we are around other people, the more their beliefs influence us and become our own.”
- Volunteer to read: “What is a Worldview?”
- A worldview is like…
- - Trees: Ideas are like branches, they are interconnected, w/a root system that feeds them all
- - - Your theological views will actually feed all other parts of your worldview (see the illustration below)
- - Eyeglasses: It effects everything you see and brings it into focus for you. If it's not the right prescription, though, everything looks off!
- - A Map: It helps you understand where you are and how to get where you want to go.
- - A Puzzle Box Top: It shows us where all of life’s little pieces go.
- Go back to page 5 in your Study Packet and add two new pictures to help further describe what a worldview is.

Welcome to Bible 8: A Worldviews Study!

Greetings All!

Welcome and congratulations on finding my class notes blog! I recommend that you bookmark this page (add it to your favorites) so that you can easily access it in the future.

On this blog you will find all sorts of helpful information for students & their parents. Nearly every day of school (by around 5pm) this blog is updated based upon our classroom discussion and activities. To find a previous day of notes not on the front page anymore, use the 'Blog Archives' on the right to find the specific day required. You can also use the 'search' function in the top left white bar to find a specific word, type it in & press enter.

Were you absent one day?
Check back here to see what we talked about in class! Class Notes from each day of instruction will be found here.  Realize that all my Bible classes for this grade share this blog, so some things you missed may have been covered in yesterday's notes, too. Ask a friend to make sure you've got everything.

Do you have a quiz to study for?
Find notes from our class discussions about this quiz posted here during the week prior to the quiz! Usually these notes will have text that is colored orange to make it easier to find when scrolling through my blog.

Do you have a Unit Test to study for?
Whatever I will test you on (with very few exceptions) has already appeared on the blog posts for that unit. As we go through each unit, you will have a 'Test Study Guide' on your 'Unit Study Packet.' Throughout class discussions you should be listening for key information & filling it in.  If you miss something, use these daily blog postings to fill in the blank areas. The day before a test we have a review game in class, notes from that will be posted on this blog for your last night of studying before your test.

Do you think you missed an important reminder in class?
Key reminders given in class are posted at the top of each day's blog.

Please do remember, this blog does not replace RenWeb or in-class handouts--it compliments them. You will still need to regularly check RenWeb. Check RenWeb daily for assignment due dates, announcements, some handout digital copies, and other key information.

I wish you the best in the coming year ahead and look forward to joining you on your journey through it! Please feel free to e-mail me (see RenWeb or your syllabus for e-mail address) if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Mr. Ellis
