The Church: An Introduction: Study Packet, Page 2
- Church: The institution that includes the… community of believers in Jesus
- This is a strictly Christian institution:
- - Atheists reject that this is a needed institution for society
- - Some atheists think it is unhealthy for society
- Key Understandings:
- - This refers to any group of believers, locally or universally
- - - It is NOT a building!
- - The church is very different from the rest of the world
- - - Made of people who’ve entered a relationship w/Jesus
- - - Confronting the world w/God’s truth (judgment, gospel, etc…)
- - A ‘colony’ of God’s kingdom inside earthly kingdoms
- - - Their ultimate loyalty is to God
- - - Their ultimate home is heaven
The Church: It is seen as…: Study Packet, Page 2
Here are some metaphors the Bible uses for the church:
- A Building:
- - Founded on who Jesus is & what He did
- - Built up by His Apostles work (e.g. Peter) (See: Matthew 16:15-18, Eph. 2:19-22, Eph. 5:25-32)
- A Pillar of the Truth: In a world that is confused about God & life (1 Tim. 3:15)
- A Field:
- - Cared for by many (Christians past & present)
- - But ultimately grown by God! (1 Cor. 3:6-9)
- A Body:
- - Where each different member has a key, God-given role
- - Each is to help build up the church (Rom. 12:4-6, Eph. 4:11-16, 1 Cor. 12:12-27)
