Sep 27, Wed - Arguments for God' Existence (Part 2/2) & the Trinity

Next Quiz/Test: Your Unit 2 Test is on Friday

Handouts: Studying for Devotion 1, Part 2 (blue)

Reminders:
Service Project: The 10 hours, 2 forms, and 1 essay are due on Apr 23, 2017
Book Report Key Due-Dates: Book Report/Project (Mon, Nov. 14, report on TurnItIn.com / Art @ start of class)
Devotion Assignment Key Due Dates: Preparation Part 1 (Oct 2, submitted in-class), Preparation Part 2 (Oct 9, submitted in-class), Outline Form (Oct 16, typed submitted to TurnItIn.com by 8am)

Instructional Time: Unit 2 - Theology
Arguments for God’s ExistenceThe Information Argument (This is a form of the design argument)
KEY: The information required for life needed a designer
- Codes exist in nature
- - Code: A complex organization of information that produces something else.
- - The chaos of nature destroys codes
- - Human-made codes: Music, blueprints, computer programs
- - - Codes require a designer
- DNA is a molecule that stores complex information needed to produce humans
- - - Theism: DNA could not come from nature alone, it needed a Designer

Arguments for God’s ExistenceThe Mind Argument
KEY: Thoughts & ideas seem to go beyond the natural cause & effect of the physical world, suggesting something more than just a physical world exists.
- If there is no God…
- - Our thoughts are only from natural causes
- - - Every thought & decision is determined by nature
- - - We can’t really choose anything different!
- - But experience shows that…
- - - We can go against the natural cause & effect of the world!
- - - We have responsibility for our thoughts & decisions!
-‘Thoughts’ seem to be from a non-physical part of us
- - Theism: This is the result of what God gave us—
- - - An inner being & mind (a soul) like His own.
- - - Christians’ believe that our thoughts come from our souls

Arguments for God’s ExistenceThe Moral Argument
KEY: Since moral law and a universal belief in right and wrong exists, there must be a moral law-giver
- Since moral law exists, there must be a Moral Law-Giver
- - If there is no God, there is no one to give a moral law
- - With no moral law, you can do whatever you want to
- - History should show different countries & cultures creating VERY different morals!
- But, cultures around the globe & throughout History…
- - All have a belief in a ‘right & wrong’ (a good & bad)
- - Have a similar view of what is ‘right & wrong’
- Where do these ideas come from?
- - Theism: God put a ‘Moral Law’ on the soul/spirit of each person
- - Romans 2:15, “the requirements of the law are written on their hearts”

NOTE: There are counter-arguments for each of these arguments.
- Some of these arguments are 'invalid' due to different logical fallacies
- Some of these arguments are valid, but use points that are either:
- - Based on incorrect information
- - Unable to be confirmed yet
- Which arguments are 'true/false'?

Reviewing The Trinity:
The Trinity: The Christian belief in one God with three Persons
- - This is NOT 3 gods!
The Three:
- - God the Father
- - God the Son
- - God the Holy Spirit
Some Bible verses Discussing the Trinity: (HCSB)
- - Genesis 1:26, 3:22, 11:7) God refers to Himself as 'Us'
- - Deuteronomy 6:4) God is referred to as 'gods' (elohim) & immediately as 'The Lord is one'
- - John 1:1ff) John describes Jesus (nick-named "The Word") as being with God & as being God!
- - Matthew 3:16–17)  Jesus is baptized and: The Father speaks, & the Holy Spirit appears as a dove
- - - “16 After Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on Him. 17 And there came a voice from heaven: This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him!” – Matthew
- - Matthew 28:19)  Jesus commands us to make disciples in the name of all three
- - - “Go, therefore, & make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” – Jesus
- - 2 Corinthians 13:13)  Paul prays a blessing for us with all three
- - - “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” – Paul
- - 1 Peter 1:2)  Peter reminds Christians that they entered a relationship w/God through all three
- - - To the Christians who are chosen “according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you. ” – Peter

Journal 2-4:
- This unit we looked at several arguments for God’s existence.  Look over your notes for this (Study Packet, page 13) & then answer…
- - 1) Which of these arguments seems most convincing to you?  Why does this sound convincing?
- - 2) Which of these arguments seems most unconvincing to you?  Why does this sound so unconvincing?
- - 3) Which of these arguments would you like to have explained better or get more information on?
- Done?
- - Fill in the 2 questions at the bottom of page 13

Here is our completed Process Grid for this unit:

Something we didn't have time to do this unit,
but is important to know is seen below.

The Trinity: Student Workbook, page 47
Reading the Paragraphs:
- - The Triune Nature of God
- - - Trinity: A word not found in the Bible, but used to describe a concept that the Bible teaches,
- - - As our textbook shares: "The triune nature of God involves three persons, who are neither three gods nor three parts/modes of God. Each person of the Godhead is distinguishable in function & characteristics.  Yet at the same time each is co-equally, co-eternally, & co-existently God."
- - The Relationships of the Trinity
- - - The nature of God is social--He is interactive w/persons in various relationships
- - - He made us as one-person beings, but also being interactive w/persons in various relationships
- - Scriptural Support for the Trinity
- - - The Old Testament word 'Elohim,' which means 'gods,' was frequently used for the one God we worship
- - - At Jesus' baptism, Father, Son, & Spirit were all present & acting 'separately' while in union!
- - - The Great Commission is to be carried out in the name of the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit
- - - And there are more!  See your textbook.
- - The Work of Each Person of the Trinity
- - - The persons of the Trinity fulfill unique roles (although some are shared)
- - - See your textbook for the examples.
- - The Mystery of the Trinity
- - - Complete comprehension/understanding of the Trinity seems impossible to humans
- - - We have no parallel thing to compare it to that we can study
- - - Since we can only apprehend/understand certain parts of it, if we are to accept it, we must have faith in God & in the trustworthiness of the Bible

Working through the Questions: Each of these answers comes from the verses mentioned in your text.
- - Our Lord God
- - - 1) Who is the Lord? God
- - - 2) Who is our God? The Lord
- - - 3) Who is God? The Lord
- - God the Father
- - - 4) How do we become God's children? If we believe in Him, He gives the right to become His children.
- - - 5) Who is the Father? God, Lord, Creator
- - - 6) Who is our Father? God
- - God the Son
- - - 7) Who is Jesus?
- - - 8) Who is Jesus like? With whom is Jesus equal? Who will everyone say Jesus is? God, God, Lord
- - - 9) Where is Jesus now? Heaven, at God's right hand
- - - 10) Where is Jesus seated? On the throne
- - - 11) Who is Jesus Christ? God
- - God the Spirit
- - - 12) Who is the Lord? The Spirit
- - - 13) What does God give? His Holy Spirit
- - - 14) Where does God's Holy Spirit live? In our bodies (for those who are saved/redeemed)
- - - 15) How do you know the Spirit is a person? He can be tested/tried & He refers to Himself as "me"
- - God the Father, the Son, & the Holy Spirit
 - - - 16) What is asked of the Trinity in this verse? Grace from God the Son, Love from God the Father, & Fellowship from the Holy Spirit

Final Paragraphs: Summarizing God's work in saving us!
- - Summary of Divine Attributes)
- - - The Father, Son, Spirit possess the same divine attributes (eternal, omnipresent, holy, love, omnipotent, etc...)
- - How They Work Together) As your textbook says...
- - - "God the Father sent God the Son to die for our sins.
- - - He sent the Holy Spirit to make us new & fill our lives w/love, joy, & peace"
- - What is my Problem) Isaiah 59:2
- - - Our sin has separated us from God
- - What did God the Father do for me? 1 John 4:9, 14

- - What did God the Son do for me? 1 Peter 2:24
- - - He bore our sins in His body to the death that we may live for righteousness
- - What did God the Holy Spirit do for me? Titus 3:5-7
- - - He spiritually renewed us to salvation
- - What Must I Do? To be saved? Well, you must...

- - - Call upon the name of the Lord (Acts 2:21)
- - - Believe in the Lord Jesus (Acts 16:31)
- - Have you?

The 3 Major Theology Worldview Groups: We reviewed these today with these two pictures.  Notes were put on Study Packets, page 9.

Defending the Existence of God:
- Christians believe that ‘General Revelation’ provides key evidence for God’s existence
- Today we study 5 of these!
- These arguments come from:
- - Logic: Philosophy & Reasoning
- - Science: Observable & Tested
- - Anthropology: Historical & Cultural studies

Arguments for God’s ExistenceThe Causal Argument
KEY: Anything that begins to exist must have been caused to exist by something else
- Scientific evidence shows the universe has a beginning (E.g. It has limited energy & is expanding from 1 point, etc…)
- - Some say that the universe came from nothing
- - - But, from nothing comes nothing
- - - Nothing cannot create or cause anything
- - Anything that begins must have been caused by something
- - - Therefore the universe’s existence must have been caused by ‘Something’
- - Theism: God is the ‘First Cause’ (or the ‘Uncaused Cause’)
- - - Someone not limited by the laws of the universe
- - - Someone more powerful than all of the universe’s energy- “What caused God?” is a category fallacy:
- - You mistake two different categories of things as the same thing.
- - God is not an effect, He does not have a beginning
- - It is like asking, “What is the taste of blue?” Wrong categories make unreasonable questions!

Arguments for God’s ExistenceThe Design Argument
KEY: If something exists that is designed, then it has a designer
- If you found a phone on the ground in the woods…
- - You would not assume: It came from nothing
- - - It had a cause!
- - You would not assume: Random forces of nature made it
- - - Natural forces create chaos, not design
- - You would think that a company designed it!
- If we know that a phone cannot accidentally happen…
- - How could the complexities of nature (e.g. our bodies) come from nothing or be caused by random forces of nature?
- - Theism: We were designed by a super-intelligent Designer.

Pantheism: “The world as we want it”
- - The belief all that exists is ultimately spiritual
- - - All is ‘god,’ but there is no ultimate “personal” god)
Examples:
- - Transcendentalists:
- - The New Age movement:
- - Hinduism:
- - Buddhism:
- - Confucianism: Some don’t think of this as a religion
- - Shintoism: A religion of Japanese origins
- - Wicca:
- - Other groups: That use horoscopes, tarot cards, astrology, etc.

Re:View: Help: Student Workbook, page 45
- 1) What was Katie trying to accomplish?
- - She was trying to make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich
- 2) Was Katie ever in any danger?  If so, give examples.  Did she know she was in danger?
- - She was in danger when she: Stood on a stool to get the peanut butter, went into the knife drawer, thought that cleaner was juice
- 3) Was Katie asked if she needed help?  Was help available all along? Did she eventually ask for help?  Why?
- -  Twice she was asked what she was doing. The 1st time she didn't answer & the 2nd time she said 'nothing.'
- - Help was available all the time, she just needed to admit that she needed it & then ask.
- - She finally asked for help when she began struggling with the jelly
- - - Thankfully this help also prevented her from poisoning herself!
- - - Interestingly, this was an area that she didn't even know she needed help in!
- 4) What do you think Katie represents? What do you think the mom represents?  The juice?
- - Katie: She represents people in the theistic worldview
- - - We need help in ways that we do & don't know
- - - We may even know that help is available, we just don't always ask for it
- - Mom: She represents God
- - - She can see the 'big picture,' she has more experience, more strength, & more wisdom
- - - She was also always available to help if there was a need
- - - In Christianity we believe God can always see us, even if we haven't asked for help
- - The Juice: This represents the dangers and mistakes that we face when trying to go through life alone
- Key Ideas:
- - We have limited abilities, but God knows & sees all
- - People often don’t ask for the help that they need, but God looks out for our safety & well-being
- - God lets us know He is there, because he wants a relationship

Re:View: Theism TS: Student Workbook, page 46
- 1) What are the five things that Theism explains? (This is Short Answer 1!)
- - How the physical world exists
- - How there can be order & design in the world
- - Human abilities of intelligence (thought), morals, & creativity exist
- - How all cultures can have had some belief in a god
- - How we have common morals (道德) (& an understanding that there are right and wrong things) around the world & through time
- 2) Why do so many people not want to believe in the Christian God? (- - Fill this out on your Study Packet, page 3)
- - Theological Reason: They don’t understand how He could exist w/the presence of evil & suffering
- - Sociological Reason: They have seen Christians that they do not like & they don’t want to be like them (e.g. extremists)
- - Personal Reason: They don’t like the biblical idea of a God: One who gives them rules to follow and judges them if for their disobedient thoughts, actions, & words
- 3) Why do many people think … restricts life?
- - We would owe Him everything!
- - We become accountable to Him for our actions.
- - We should live how He wants us to.
- 4) What more could God do…?
- - There are lots of answers you could give to this!
- - Often the Christian response is something like this: God has revealed enough of Himself to convince the heart & mind of those who are actually humble enough to search for Him & accept His truth.

Theism Details: Fill in these final details on your Study Packet, page 5
- Why do people like this view?
- - A good, all-powerful, all-knowing God will help us
- - There is something bigger & better than this world
- How do they answer the Ultimate Questions?
- - Origins: A spiritual God made everything
- - Meaning: To live for God in His ways
- - Morality: Follow the rules God gave us
- - Destiny: In Christianity there is “Final Judgment” (see below for a summary)

Even between the land and the ship.”

Sep 12, Tue - Qualities of God

Next Quiz/Test: THURSDAY is Quiz 2a: John 1:1, 10-12 (ESV)

Handouts: Luke 10:38-42 Passages (white)

Reminders:
Service Project: The 10 hours, 2 forms, and 1 essay are due on Apr 23, 2017
Book Report Key Due-Dates: Pre-Reading Form (Mon, Sep. 25, @ start of class), Book Report/Project (Mon, Nov. 14, report on TurnItIn.com / Art @ start of class)

Instructional Time: Unit 2 - Theology
Journal: Understanding the Bible, Page 3
- Pick up one of the small white papers from below:
- - Read over Luke 10:38-42 in all three translations
- - - Underline or highlight key differences that you notice
- - - Write notes, questions, or key insights you gained by reading this in more than one version on the side.
- - Can you read another language?
- - - Let Mr. Ellis know—he will hopefully have a copy of these verses in that translation, too!
- Next, go to pg 3 of “Understanding the Bible” and…
- - Fill out the Selection with the above verse
- - Fill out your Observations (Summarize the story, what’s happening?)
- - Fill out your Interpretations (What key ideas is this teaching?)
- - Later we will do the Applications
- - - This will be turned in, make sure to do a good job!
- Class Discussion: We created a list of our Observations & Interpretations
- - I explained 'Which Mary' this was (there are at least 6 in the New Testament!)

What is God Like? (Take notes on your Study Packet, page 6-7) God is...
Personal: God is a personal being
- - He is a unique individual w/self-awareness, the ability to make choices, & the ability to experience feelings (like joy, anger, or love)
- - He made us personal so we can have a relationship w/Him
Triune: (Tri = 3, une = Unity & A unity of 3)
- - He is one God (monotheism) w/3 persons (Trinitarianism)
- - The Three Persons: Father, Son (Jesus), Holy Spirit
- - - NOTE: The words 'Father' & 'Son' are not used to talk about 'created' (how Jesus was 'made')
- - - - According to the Bible, Jesus has eternally existed, as has the Father & the Holy Spirit
- - - - The words 'Father' & 'Son' are used to talk about 'relation' (how Jesus & the Father relate, as a perfect son would relate to a perfect father)
- - He is not:
- - - 1 God pretending to be 3 gods
- - - 1 God divided into three parts
- - He is one Being, w/3 persons, we call this "The Trinity"
- - - This is very hard for us to understand because any healthy being that we know (e.g. people...) only has one person; God is the only being we know that has three persons.
- - Some examples to help understand this are below; none of them perfectly describe this idea, though.
- - - Eggs) 1 thing w/three parts [shell, yolk, white)
- - - H2O) 1 things w/3 forms [ice, liquid, gas]
- - - A Parent) 1 thing w/3 roles (husband, father, son)
- - - This Picture) The ‘most accurate’ example (Fill in this picture on your workbook)

- - A quick note here:
- - - The Bible does not have contradictions: where it says one thing & then something different
- - - - An example of a contradiction is: (A = B) and (A does not = B), these statements are contradictory.
- - - The Bible does have mysteries: where it says something that we do not fully understand
- - - - An example of a mystery is: (A = B) (A = C) (A = D), but we don't know how each of those (B, C, & D) can all = A
- - - - Gravity is a bit of a mystery to science.  We can describe how it works, but we don't fully understand why.
Involved: God cares for us & is involved w/world history
- - God created all, hears & sees us, became a man to help us have a relationship w/Him, promises to always be w/us (never leaving or forsaking us)
- - Deism: The belief that God created all but is not involved (they don’t believe in miracles & special revelation)
Judge: God loves us, but He cannot accept sin as ‘okay’
- - God is holy (perfect in His goodness & all else)
- - Therefore,  He must hold us responsible for our sins
- - - He has wrath (anger & judgment) on unforgiven sinners
- - He is always fair and righteous (good) in His Judgment
- - - Exodus 34:6-7) This shows God’s heart on this issue
- - - - "...“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin ..."
Redeemer: What protects us from His wrath & final judgment
- - An expression of God’s love, mercy, & grace
- - God came as God the Son (Jesus) to away the judgment we deserve for sin (death)
- - - The main reason Jesus came was to redeem (save) us!
- - Seen in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
- - Who does this verse say God loved?
- - - The World!
- - - Every social, racial, age, or gender group!
- - - Anyone can be saved by receiving & believing in Jesus!
- - We are redeemed to eternal life & relationship w/God!
