Journal 7-9: Study Packet, Page 7 & 18
- Read “Considering a Legacy” (page 7)
- - Note:
- - - A “Legacy” is what you hand or pass down” to future people (often family) after you die
- - - It could be property, traditions, a reputation, or more!
- - Afterwards, answer the three questions at the bottom of this small article as Journal 7-9 (page 18)
- - 1) Do you think that this is a good legacy to have?   Why or why not?
- - 2) Describe the type of legacy you would want your family to have and why you would want it.
- - 3) How do you think you could help guide your family to this end?

What does the Bible say about Homosexuality: Study Packet, Pages 10
- We finished talking through this today.
- Genesis 1:27–28 & 2:18–24 share the original example God set for marriage
- - In this we see that the idea set-up for a family is one man, one women, and then children.
- - Don't you think God had the best design with His original design before sin was even an issue?
- Romans 1:26–32 brings up God's clear teaching against homosexuality
- - But, here we also see it is paired alongside other 'more popular' sins like: wickedness, evil, greed, depravity, envy (selfish jealousy), murder (involves anger/hatred), strife, deceit (lies), malice (wanting others to be hurt), gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogance & boastfulness (pride); inventing ways of doing evil; disobeying parents; having no understanding, not being faithful, having no love nor mercy, simply knowing God's laws & chose not to do it.
- - - In American culture some have made it sound like homosexuality is a HUGE issue for Christians, a MAJOR sin, bigger than most others!
- - - Yet here you see it is alongside with greed, gossiping, lying, and pride!
- - EVERY sin is a HUGE issue for God!
- - - It is NOT right for us to pick and choose which ones we will especially point out as evil and then be okay with the others.
- Leviticus 18:22 & 20:13 are the Old Testament (OT) laws that speak against homosexuality:
- - In the New Testament we hear that one of the purposes of the OT law was to point out our sins and show how we are broken and in need of God
- - These verses show how people are broken by homosexuality & are in need of God's healing and forgiveness to overcome it!
- - - They cannot do it on their own!
- - - Each of us is 'born into' sins & in need of God's saving power.
- 1 Timothy 1:8–10 shared that homosexuality is along side with other sins (like Romans 1:26-32 pointed out)
- - Homosexuality is a sin, just as killing parents, murdering, sexual immorality, slave trading, lying, perjurers, and going against contrary to sound doctrine are all sins!
- 1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (NIV) shares a VERY important truth in this conversation!
- - "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?
- - - Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
- - - And that is what some of you were.
- - - - But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."
- - Did you catch that? These Christians were ONCE sinners in all those ways listed (including homosexuality.
- - - The early church already reached out to people with that sin!
- - But what happened?
- - - When these people recognized their sin & need for God (a key purpose of the law), they came to Him in repentance!
- - - God then washed them, sanctified them, & justified them!
- - - Healing from any sin is found through God's cleansing & forgiving power!
- Finally we had a brief discussion on how Jesus dealt with people who struggled with sexual sins
- - Specifically we looked at:
- - - The Woman at the Well (John 4)
- - - The Woman caught in Adultery (John 8:1-11):
- - - - "Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
- - - - “No, Lord,” she said.
- - - - And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”"
- - Jesus clearly confronted them in their sin & pointed out that it was wrong
- - - You can check this out even more in Revelation 2:18-29
- - Jesus also showed them mercy & compassion in both His attitude & His words!
- - - He invited them to repent and enter a relationship with Him!

Christian View: Christian Involvement in the Government: Study Packet, Page 3
- Christians are called to be in but not of (or ‘like’) the world. (John 17:15-16)
- - This includes politics. Here are five key ways Christians should take part in the government:
- We should be involved with…
- - Obedience: God calls on us to obey the government
- - Appeals for Change: Respectfully question & challenge when they are wrong
- - Civil Disobedience: God calls on us to disobey the government when it goes against what God commands
- - Prayer: For leaders
- - Political Involvement: God-followers should take part in the government to help it govern in a godly way (Examples: Joseph, David, Daniel, Esther, Nehemiah, etc...)

Journal: Pick up & work through the paper below, "A Martin Luther King Jr. Day Reflection"

Civil Rights Discussion: For the rest of class, using our worksheet as a 'spring-board,' we discussed civil rights issues.
- 1) In the box to the right, explain how each of the verses to the left share that all people have equal value in God's eyes.
- - Genesis 1:26–27; Colossians 3:11; Romans 3:22, 10:12

- To be afflicted or oppressed is to be caused to experience pain, suffering, or hardship.
- How does someone start to become afflicted and oppressed?
- - Sometimes uncontrollable life situations cause it (e.g. a disease)
- - Sometimes their own poor choice cause it (e.g. gambling)
- - Sometimes another person or group (even a society’s culture) will cause it (e.g. slavery)
- The Bible often summarize people who are oppressed & afflicted in three categories:
- - The Fatherless: Orphans, those whose parents have died
- - Widows: a woman whose husband has died
- - Foreigners: Internationals, those who have had, for some reason, to leave their country
- While these three categories are not the only ones who suffer, it was a list that summarized it for the Old Testament times. In our culture we could probably add several more categories to this list, for example: Unborn children, single mothers, the elderly who no one cares for, children of prisoners, families who can’t find employment, the homeless, etc…
- What should we do for these people?  As Martin Luther King Jr. quoted in his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, God shares that we should “let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5:24 NIV). On the next page we’ll see more about God’s own view of these things & what He tells us to do.

- 2) What do these verses share about what God does and how God feels about caring for the oppressed?
- - Psalm 146:7–10; Deuteronomy 10:17–19

- 3) God is very clear on giving us general directions and specific examples on how to live out His heart for the afflicted.  What do these verse share about how we should treat people who are oppressed?
- - Proverbs 31:8–9; Psalm 82:3; Isaiah 1:17; Micah 6:8; James 1:27

- So, what does this all mean for you?
- - How can you practically live out God’s heart for those who are afflicted & oppressed?
- - Answers these questions in your Study Packet for the journal your teacher directs you to.

- When we do something bad or make mistakes, we experience guilt & shame . Below are three different ways of dealing with guilt & shame. For each one, write down what might happen in your life (both good and bad things) if you deal with guilt & shame in that way:
- - 1) Ignore and block out the guilt & shame— Pretend it is not there.
- - 2) Dwell on the guilt & shame— Let it consume your thoughts & feelings.
- - 3) Recognize the reality of the guilt & shame— Confess it to God, repent from what you did that caused it, and receive the forgiveness that God offers.

Note: We didn't get to all of these notes today.  Some are pre-posted for tomorrow.

- Questions:
- - 1) v13) ‘By doing this’ (healing the man), what did God bring to Jesus?
- - - God brought glory to His servant Jesus?

Defenses for Psychological Dualism: Study Packet, Page 2
(Side note: This is the Christian view; below are some ways Christians may defend it)
- Scientific Evidence: Our physical brain health plays a key role in our psychology!
- - E.g. A brain injury will really mes someone up!
- Unity of Identity: Our identity stays the same, even when the physical cells of our body are constantly changing.
- - Note: Brain cells are the most unchanging cells, however, even they experience forms of change, although they do not seem to be completely replaced.
- Freedom to Choose: Human experience shows that we have this!
- - Without allowing our mind to have a supernatural part we have no explanation for this freedom!
- - - If we were only physical  then our mental responses would only be the result of the physical cause & effects relationships of the world
- - - - But we can go against how the physical world ‘pushes us’!
- - - Having a spiritual part of our mind allows us to go break the physical chain of cause/effect events, allowing for true freedom
- Near Death Experiences:
- - A controversial claim, even between Christians
- - - Why?  Because there have been some who claimed to have this, but were lying!
- - Based on people’s testimonies of significant conscious experiences when they were medically brain-dead
- - - When they had these, their physical brain was totally inactive!
- - Books written by people who claimed to have this:
- - - "90 Minutes in Heaven," by Don Piper
- - - "23 Minutes in Hell," by Bill Wiese
- - - "Heaven is for Real," by Todd Burpo
- - - "The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven," by Keven & Alex Malarkey
- - - - The person who put this together later came out to share that he made it up!
- - - "Proof of Heaven," by Eben Alexander

Psychology in the big story of Christianity: Study Packet, Page 3
Creation: Genesis 1-2
- God made us in “in His image”
- - While sin damaged this, the image of God within us was not destroyed by sin!
- - This (who we were) was very good!
- We are given the ability to…
- - Choose, create, & have a real relationship with God
- We should reflect God through who we are & how we live!
- - We were made to reflect who God is in right-living!

The Fall: Genesis 3
We sinned against God
- - Sin caused our psychological problems
- - - What are sins?
- - - What example sins do JH students struggle with?
- - Sin is anything we think, do, or say that displeases God
- - - When we sin, it shows that we do not trust God
- - - - And that we do rightly love God
- - Sin has broken how we think and feel
- - - Wrong thoughts are the root of many current problems
- - - Words, attitudes, & actions originate from these

What are we tempted to sin by?
- Look at the matching ways that we are tempted (#s 1-3) in these verses:
- - Genesis 3:6, “….the woman saw that the tree was (1) good for food, and that it was (2) a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was (3) to be desired to make one wise…”
- - 1 John 2:16, “For all that is in the world— (1) the desires of the flesh and (2) the desires of the eyes and (3) pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
- - Jesus conquers these when He was tempted in the desert! (See Matthew 4:1-11 & Luke 4:1-13)
- James 1:13-14, “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.”  (NIV)
- - We are tempted to sin by our own evil desires!

Because God loves us, sin is not that big of a deal, right?  Nope...
- - Not really...  Consider what these verses share about how we are judged:
- - - Ecclesiastes 12:13–14, “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” (NIV)
- - - 2 Corinthians 5:9–10, “So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” (NIV)
- Therefore, we are each responsible to God for all of our sins

Four main ways sin affects us: Short Answer #1

- - The Bible shares: “For the wages of sin is death...” – Romans 6:23 NIV
- - - This means that the 'pay' (wages, thing we deserve) that we get for sinning is death
- - - And the Bible shares many ways in which we die...
- - Here are 4 key ways that sin caused death: Each was experienced by Adam & Eve & has been experienced by every human since then.
- - - Our perfect internal nature died:
- - - - Adam & Eve instantly experienced guilt, shame, irresponsible
- - - - Added to this, we now have a desire to sin
- - - - - Sin was like a spiritual addiction for us, we kept wanting to do it, even though it hurt us!- - - Our relationship with God died:
- - - - Adam & Eve instantly ran & hide from God
- - - - We ll now live in disobedience to God, running & hiding from Him!
- - - Our relationships with others died:
- - - - Adam & Eve instantly began to sin against each other
- - - - - You see Adam not taking personal responsibility & instead blaming Eve
- - - - - You can imagine that this may have caused a bit of a fight between them...
- - - - Cain, the first child, ends up then killing Abel, the second child!
- - - - Our gossip, fights & arguments, slander, etc... are all results of sin
- - - Our bodies physically die:
- - - - Adam & Eve didn't seem to experience this right away,
- - - - - But they did instantly put themselves on the path that led to it.
- - - - We work hard to live and then we die!

The Spread & Power of Sin:
- Here are some key verses:
- - Genesis 6:5, “The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
- - Genesis 8:21, “…the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth…”
- - Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
- - Ephesians 2:1, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins”
- - Romans 5:12, “Sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned”
- - Romans 3:10-18, 23, “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
- To summarize: According to the Bible—
- - All people are naturally sinful/bad (we have a sinful nature),
- - Therefore, we fall short of God’s glory,
- - Therefore, we deserve death.

Jan 3, Wed - Psychology Intro.

Next Quiz/Test: Friday is Memory Quiz 6a: Romans 8:5-6

HandoutsNone given

Reminders:
Service Project: The 10 hours, 2 forms, and 1 essay are due on Apr 23, 2018
Devotion 2 Outline: Due January 8th. Re-read the instructions (this lists your Devotion 2 Book Choices). Learn from your previous ones & start this early & make it good!

Instructional Time: Unit 6: Psychology
Journal 6-1: Study Packet, Page 11
- What do you think are the different elements (or ‘parts’) of the totality of a human being?
- - List as many as you can!
- - Explain what each one is.
- Read Luke 10:27 for some ideas
- - This includes our heart, soul, mind, & strength

Worldviews Unit 6 - Psychology: Study Packet, Page 2
- Psychology: The study of the human mind.
- Our focus: What is the human (internal) nature?
- - We will not get much into the actual college class focuses of psychology
- - We are much more focused on the Christian spiritual perspective of the internal nature of people

Psychology - The Inner Human Nature: Study Packet, Page 2
- Your theological & philosophical perspective determines your view of psychology (roots of your worldview)
- Psychological Monism: The belief that the human mind is made of only one thing.
- - Naturalistic Monism: The Atheist belief that the mind is only physical
- - Transcendental Monism: The Pantheist belief that the mind is ultimately only spiritual
- A one-dimensional view of the universe
- - If they are wrong, then they cannot deal with the fullness of the problems that we face!
- Psychological Dualism: The belief that the human mind is both physical (the brain) & spiritual (the mind/soul/spirit)
- - Examples of non-physical elements of the self: Feelings, Ideas, Morality, Information, etc...

Dealing w/Mind Problems
- People who believe psychological monism…
- - Only try to fix problems by focusing on one thing (spirit or body)
- - But, if you are wrong,
- - - You aren’t treating the full problem!
- - - - E.g. You only treat the body & neglect spiritual problems
- - - - E.g. You only treat spiritual problems & neglect the body
- - - You may make new problems while trying to fix things!
- In the Biblical approach of psychological dualism…
- - God holistically addresses our problems: Spirit & Body
- - - E.g.: While Jesus physically healed people, He also forgave their sins! (t.g. Matthew 9:1–8)
- - God calls on us to do the same!

Service Project: For the rest of class we talked up this semester's service project.

- - Work on Devotion 2: Due on Monday!

The Context of Romans 8:1-11: The context of these verses is found in the “Big Story” of the Christianity found w/in the Bible: Remember our discussion of that from earlier this year? As a review:
- Creation:
- - God made us as physical beings with a spiritual side & we were made in His image, spiritually
- - It was “Very Good!” (Therefore, we had a 'Very Good' nature!)
- Fall:
- - We disobeyed God (we call this sin)
- - This broke our “Very Good” nature
- - We created a ‘sinful nature’ (a nature of the ‘flesh’) for ourselves
- Redemption: Through the physical and spiritual work of Jesus Christ, God offered a way to have our lives and our relationship with God healed!
- Restoration:
- - We are totally healed in the end!
- - Our sinful nature and all of sins evil affects are fully gone from all humans who are with God!

Digging into Romans 8:1-11: In these verses Paul talks about several things related to this "Big Picture of the Bible." He talks about…
- How the Fall affects us:
- - Death (v2, 6),
- - Our thoughts are on sinful things (v5)
- - Hostile toward God (v7),
- - Not (even able to be) submissive to God’s law (v7),
- - Unable to please God (v8)
- The result of Redemption & how it happened:
- - No condemnation (v1),
- - Set us free from the law of sin & death (v2),
- - Lets our thoughts be on the Spirit (v5),
- - Life & peace (v6),
- What the final Restoration will cause:
- - We are given ultimate life beyond this body’s death (vv10-11)

Quiz 5a Preparation:
- Your Verses: Romans 8:5-6
- - Flesh: Symbolic reference to the sinful nature
- - Mind: Your inner being, thoughts, what you think of
- - Spirit: God, the Holy Spirit
- Your Questions: Based upon class discussion & your personal reflection of these verses, use complete sentences & your own words to specifically answer:
- - 1) How does sin affect what we think about? What does this lead to?
- - - Sin causes us to think about sin.
- - - Death: Describe some different types of death in your answer:
- - - - Spiritual Death: Our relationship with God was destroyed
- - - - Physical Death: Our bodies will one day die
- - - - Internal Death: Our perfect internal nature is dead
- - - - Social Death: Our relationships with others is destroyed
- - 2) Explain what the result is when we let God’s Holy Spirit focus our thinking on Himself.
- - - Life: We begin to live the life the way that God always wanted us to live!
- - - - Think about all of the opposites of the different types of death above!
- - - Peace: Found in three key areas:
- - - - We have peace in our relationships with God, this one is of greatest importance!
- - - - We have peace in our relationships with others
- - - - We have peace within ourselves!
