- Creation:
- - God made us as physical beings with a spiritual side & we were made in His image, spiritually
- - It was “Very Good!” (Therefore, we had a 'Very Good' nature!)
- Fall:
- - We disobeyed God (we call this sin)
- - This broke our “Very Good” nature
- - We created a ‘sinful nature’ (a nature of the ‘flesh’) for ourselves
- Redemption: Through the physical and spiritual work of Jesus Christ, God offered a way to have our lives and our relationship with God healed!
- Restoration:
- - We are totally healed in the end!
- - Our sinful nature and all of sins evil affects are fully gone from all humans who are with God!
Digging into Romans 8:1-11: In these verses Paul talks about several things related to this "Big Picture of the Bible." He talks about…
- How the Fall affects us:
- - Death (v2, 6),
- - Our thoughts are on sinful things (v5)
- - Hostile toward God (v7),
- - Not (even able to be) submissive to God’s law (v7),
- - Unable to please God (v8)
- The result of Redemption & how it happened:
- - No condemnation (v1),
- - Set us free from the law of sin & death (v2),
- - Lets our thoughts be on the Spirit (v5),
- - Life & peace (v6),
- What the final Restoration will cause:
- - We are given ultimate life beyond this body’s death (vv10-11)
- Your Verses: Romans 8:5-6
- - Flesh: Symbolic reference to the sinful nature
- - Mind: Your inner being, thoughts, what you think of
- - Spirit: God, the Holy Spirit
- Your Questions: Based upon class discussion & your personal reflection of these verses, use complete sentences & your own words to specifically answer:
- - 1) How does sin affect what we think about? What does this lead to?
- - - Sin causes us to think about sin.
- - - Death: Describe some different types of death in your answer:
- - - - Spiritual Death: Our relationship with God was destroyed
- - - - Physical Death: Our bodies will one day die
- - - - Internal Death: Our perfect internal nature is dead
- - - - Social Death: Our relationships with others is destroyed
- - 2) Explain what the result is when we let God’s Holy Spirit focus our thinking on Himself.
- - - Life: We begin to live the life the way that God always wanted us to live!
- - - - Think about all of the opposites of the different types of death above!
- - - Peace: Found in three key areas:
- - - - We have peace in our relationships with God, this one is of greatest importance!
- - - - We have peace in our relationships with others
- - - - We have peace within ourselves!
